ancestors is an ongoing body of work anchored by a meditative practice that builds bridges across space and time, allowing me to sense and relive pieces of past lives. the mask-esque figures, spanning mediums and scales, are byproducts of a stream of conscious mark making process often accompanied by free flowing poetry and prose. for a long time i thought of these figures as visual journal entries, but the more i've sat with them and the more conversations they elicit, the more they have felt like messages from ancestors guiding my journey and reminding me of our highest purpose as collective beings.

what began as quarter size doodles in notebooks that would take a few seconds, has grown into large scale mixed media paintings, two volumes (in a series of 10) of ink/paint marker drawings with typed words, block prints, and sculptural elements that meld together my backgrounds in design and fabrication. the patterns, shapes, and textures seen throughout call back to ancestral art and markings found across indigenous cultures near and far — often inspired by a feeling, other times directly inspired by artifacts i come across in the collections of museums across the world. it’s been interesting to create marks and later come across similar forms in my research — a reminder of the muscle memory passed down from generation to generation. the combination of bright and earth-colored palettes i utilize emphasize the vibrancy of the spirits of ancestors who always found a way in part due to the relationships to the lands they tended.

this body of work has brought me an enormous amount of healing, i trust they will offer you the same — ashe.

ancestors vol. 1 & 2, installed in my studio while in residence at the joan mitchell center

ancestors, vol. 1

ink & paint markers on 6” x 9” art paper, 2018-2020

this collection was done over the course of a 2 year period — spanning the year before and after my mother’s transition. in many ways, they feel like words she never got to offer… conversations that made up for the years spent apart; conversations that i'll need to have in the future; conversations that will keep me going forward. sitting with these works, often in the wee hours of the night, afforded me the time and space to process and heal. the words contained on these pages are raw, personal… but they were never intended to be just for me. i hope you find something you were looking for or need in this moment. a book featuring the 101 drawings from this collection (accidentally made two 23s — guess we need bron and mj!) alongside some photographs from the same period is in the works. stay tuned for updates by signing up for the mailing list!

radical royalty

acrylics, oil sticks, pastels, paint markers, mixed media, 48” x 72”

this series is an exploration into the ways in which royalty would have been expressed via marks and adornment by ancestors. the figures themselves pay homage to present-day family members and the process of creating them has given me the opportunity to engage loved ones on what royalty means to them, what aspects of their being they deem royal, etc. in addition to a combination of acrylic paints, oil sticks, and paint markers, each piece also features 3-d elements such as dried flowers, beads, braided banana leaves, feathers, and more.

oil sticks, pastels, mixed media, 48” x 72”

this series is more aligned to my free-flowing drawings on paper, with each piece being painted to a particular song on repeat that inspires the forms, patterns, and palettes that emerge. if you have a song that you think i should paint to, drop me a line here!
